비행기를 이용해 여행/출장을 다니다 보면, 동물들과 함께 다니는 여행객들을 많이 보게 됩니다.
애견가방에 들어있는 작은 강아지와 고양이부터, 가슴에 Service Dog이라고 조끼를 입혀서 데리고 다니는 안내견들도 있더군요.
며칠전에 탑승했던 AA비행기에서는 부부가 각각 작은 치와와 강아지를 무릎에 앉혀서 데리고 탔는데요.
두마리의 강아지가 입고 있는 Vest에 써 있는 글이 조금은 재미있더라구요. “Emotional Support”~~!!!@@
저 역시 강아지를 오랜동안 키우긴했지만, 한번도 비행기로 여행을 같이 해 본적은 없었습니다.
그런데, 오늘 이런 저런 뉴스를 보던중에 이런 기사가 하나 눈에 들어왔는데요. 여기서 호기심이 생기기 시작했어요.

이 신문기사의 주요 내용은…
뉴욕에서 올랜도까지 델타항공을 이용해서 여행자와 Pit Bull한마리가 같이 여행을 했는데,
며칠후에 뉴욕으로 돌아가려 했더니 델타항공이 탑승을 거부했다.
$200의 Pet Check in Fee도 냈지만, 델타의 Pet Travel Policy에 의하면,
첫 일정인 뉴욕에서 올랜도로 가는 비행기에 탑승한 자체도 Pet Travel Policy에 어긋난일이다.
바로 이 항목때문입니다.
“Delta no longer accepts snub-nosed or pug-nosed dogs and cats as checked baggage.”
원웨이 티켓을 구하려, 이곳 저곳 여러 항공사에 전화해 봤지만, 모두 안된다는 얘기만 들었습니다.
이 개의 종류가 Pit Bull이라서 그렇다고 했다네요.
유일하게 Jet Blue에서는 거부의 이유가 조금 달랐구요. Jet Blue는 20파운드 이상의 동물은 안된다는 Policy가 있다고 했답니다.
Policiy가 그렇다고는 하지만, 갈때는 되었는데, 돌아오려는데 안된다고 하면…
참 난감한 일이죠.
이 여행객은 여행객대로 고생중이고, (아마도 렌트카를 해서 뉴욕으로 돌아가고 있을거라는 추측만~~)
델타는 델타대로 어찌 처리를 해야하나 골머리를 앓고 있는것 같습니다.
그래서 오늘은, 비행기에 탑승할때 일반적인 Pet Travel Policy가 어떻게 되는지 조금 조사를 해 봤습니다.
일단 델타에서 안된다고 Policy에 명시되어있는 “snub-nosed or pug-nosed dog”의 종류를 찾아봤는데요.
밑에 열거된 종류의 Dog은 안된다고 하네요.

전부 다는 모르겠지만, 저희들이 많이 키우는 강아지들의 종류가 보입니다.
위의 리스트는 델타에서 정의한 여행 불가한 강아지의 종류이구요. 각 항공사마다 이에 대한 정의가 좀 다른면을 볼 수가 있네요.
5개 항공사만 일단 정리해 보겠습니다.
Delta no longer accepts snub-nosed or pug-nosed dogs and cats as checked baggage. Certain breeds may be acceptable for transport as cargo.
United Airlines
United does not accept English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Olde English Bulldogges or mixes of these breeds that are older than six months or weigh more than 20 pounds at any time of year. Dogs of these breeds and their mixes that are younger than six months or weigh less than 20 pounds are accepted year-round. Refer to the shipping requirements in the short-nosed (brachycephalic) dog breeds section to ensure the safety of your animal.
United Airlines는 6개월이상이나, 20파운드가 넘어가면 받을수없는 종류를 나열했구요.
Southwest Airlines will only accept small cats and dogs in carriers that can be stowed under the Customer’s seat.
Southwest Airlines는 종류는 상관없이 자리 밑에 넣을수 있는 사이즈의 동물 캐리어에 넣어서 타면 된다고 합니다.
American Airlines does not accept brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs of any “mix” as checked luggage.
American Airlines는 델타와 같은 입장이네요.
Only accepts small cats and dogs as pets in the aircraft cabin onboard our flights.
Jet Blue는 Southwest와 같은 Policy에, 20파운드를 리밋으로 하고 있습니다.
델타항공에서는 기종과 Seat Class별 Policy를 공홈에 공시하고 있습니다.
First Class /Delta One™ / Business Class Restriction
Pets in Cabin are not allowed in the First Class/ Delta One / Business Class cabin on any international segment, regardless of aircraft type due to insufficient space.
767 Aircraft Restriction
Animals will not be accepted as checked baggage or cargo on any Delta operated 767 aircraft. There are no exceptions to this restriction for any passenger.
Airbus 330-200 Aircraft Restriction
Animals will not be accepted as checked baggage on any Delta operated A330-200 aircraft. There are no exceptions to this restriction for any passenger.
Flat Bed Seat Restriction
Pets are not allowed in the First Class, Business or Delta One Cabin on certain flights.
이번 사건을 델타가 어떻게 해결하면서 발표할지는 두고봐야 할 일이지만,
별로 생각해보지 않았던 중요한 점을 일깨우게 해주는 계기였던것은 틀림 없습니다.
